    SIGGRAPH 2008 Update!

    Posted by chad3d on August 17, 2008

Siggraph 2008 was a blast!! I can not even start to describe everything that was going on without making this a 700 page blog. Most Importantly though was Animation Mentor and their staff. I got to talk to Bobby Beck and Victoria Tripp and realize that the Maya springboard wasn’t the right direction to take which was a huge help. Also they had a ton of events everything from Networking, Correct facial expressions to Demo Reel do’s and don’ts. Everyone at Animation Mentor was friendly and great to get to know. Bobby was enthusiastic and welcome to meeting new students. Victoria was full of great information and always smiling even while working her butt off. Molly was sweet and very informational. Micheal was a great person to meet, cool guy, keep up the great work on those newsletters man can’t wait to read the next one! Shawn was funny and had a great personality. Was wonderful to talk to him about the school and the events that they had going on. I also got to talk to many of the students, current students, alumni, and students starting when I do. It was great to see more of the Animation Mentor community and become a part of it. I can’t wait to get started on the 29th.

Then after all that I also got to check out the job fair and meet all the recruiters and find out what they would be looking for and expect for next year when I go there actually looking for a job! It was a great time and very informational. Its gonna be great going back next year. Well I’m off to watch some Digital Tutors Videos to get ready for class on the 29th and read the plethora of books I bought as well. Till next time I will leave ya with the awesome crowd surfing that Shawn Kelly did at Birds of a Feather!

    Siggraph 2008

    Posted by chad3d on August 9, 2008

I will be heading out to LA to attend the SIGGRAPH convention this year. Animation Mentor will have a booth there (#1401) and I will be heading straight there when I get there to sign up for there tuition competition! Its a story writing contest called Help Spike Get Home! I have my story done already and just need to finish up my drawings for it. I am also building a Indy Jones version of Spike out of Clay, I will bring it with me to SIGGRAPH to give to the school if they will take it.  I hope I get to meet Bobby and the other founders at there booth.  I’m also meeting Jeremy Totel there too. He is the owner artist of Pixel Eight a freelance company that he started. He was nice enough to volunteer to show me around the first day since this will be my first time to SIGGRAPH. This is going to be sensory overload I’m sure but I can’t wait to see everything and loads of people with the same interests as myself.  Should be a great experience and fun writing about it.

    What is Animation Mentor?

    Posted by chad3d on August 9, 2008

Animation Mentor is a online school that teaches character animation. Its a 18 month program that grants you the wisdom of animators out there in the industry and a certification certificate upon completion. Now I already have my Associates of Computer science of 3D animation from Full Sail. However I didn’t learn what I feel I needed too to become a great character animator and land a job at a respectable studio. So about a year or two ago I heard about this online school, at the time I did not have the money to dish out to join and I didn’t know what to think of online classes for that price range. Recently I have read articles about there school in 3D World magazine and also a article on Aja Bogdanoff and how she landed a job on Horton Hears a Who! After reading this and watching all of there webinars it turns out they are pretty reputable!

So after some serious thought if I wanted to invest money into a new endeavor I decided it was time to take my passion for bringing things to life to a new level. Bobby Beck, Carlos Baena and Shawn Kelly put together a great school for animators taught by animators! I’m psyched and can’t wait to get started. So I will be posting my outlook on the school as I go through it and sharing my adventure as it unfolds!

    Sincerely Yours,

    Chad Swanson (Character Animator)
